We here at Aetherworks understand the concerns and high costs associated with international postage. There’s no two-ways about it, the Australian Postal system is expensive, and the nature of our building products mean that they have to be sent as large parcels via our postal system.

In order to provide some compensation and to let our international customers know that we are aware of these issues, for at least the next few months until we can find better alternatives, we will be including a special promotion for all international orders amounting to $50.00AUD postage or more of an exclusive Post Office building. The only other requirement is that these orders consist of at least 75% value in Aetherworks products (excluding postage).

This building is based off our Flat Roof Building, except with a vertical plank design and a special “Post Office” sign. It will not be available anywhere else while we run this promotion. It will automatically be added to your order once we start processing it (you don’t need mention or add it into your order). Feel free to contact us for more information or questions.

We’ve seen a number of buildings built and painted now, and noticed there’s a few simple ways to really take your buildings to the next level. We’ll list a few here, and be sure to leave a comment if there are more things you can think of. We see this as the first in a series of articles on how you can take your buildings to the next step.

Display Goods and Gribblies

One of the easiest ways to decorate a building is to simply glue some accessories that hint to the buildings purpose on the front deck. The example above by Jamie Downward (miniature from Wyrd Miniatures) uses accessories from a few different ranges to show the clutter that would sit outside a general store.

The Undertakers by Andrew Lum uses the tombstones and coffins from our Graveyard pack to emphasise the the nature of the work conducted by the building inhabitants.

Corrugated Iron Roof

Adding a corrugated iron roof is as simple as cutting the corrugated card to shape and sticking it on the roof. You can find corrugated card for sale in craft sections of most stores that sell art supplies (the sheets shown above were purchased from a discount dollar store). Add a folded strip of card along the top to hide the join – you can see this on the work in progress building below, where we have used a white strip of card across the top.

Nick Fletcher’s Arcane Supplies and Seamstress buildings show how effective the corrugated iron roofing can look by painting or drybrushing it with metallic paints, and then applying washes to add in the effects of rusted weathering and dirt. Additional patches of corrugated card indicate areas where the roof has been repaired, giving a great ramshackle look.

Shingled Roof

With a bit of patience, adding a shingled roof using cereal card cut to shape and glued on the roof is the next step you can accomplish when you have enough corrugated iron roofs around town. Simply cut the cereal packet into strips, and snip wedges out so you have what looks like a row of teeth or a comb. Glue these strips overlapping each other on your roof and work your way up to the top, finishing off with a strip of card like the corrugated iron roof above.

Robert Sakaluk’s barber shop has both shingles on the roof and on the awning, and is finished off with a simple barber pole.

Custom Signage

Each of buildings comes with a blank sign that can be decorated in a number of ways – if you have a steady hand, you can paint the name of your shop straight onto the sign (and perhaps some flourishes and decorations too). You could also use transfers, or simply glue on a design you have created on the computer and printed out on your printer.

Our webstore has a range of signage that is ready to be stuck on and painted. The etched lettering makes it easy to paint, our tip is to go with high contract between the background and the letters to really make the letters pop out. The town photo above by Robert Sakaluk and Andrew Lum feature the pre-made signage from the store.

We can also create custom signs if you want something customised to your game or setting – contact us to find out more.

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions from emails, conventions and online blogs and forums regarding our Wild West terrain, and we hope it will provide some helpful answers for you. You can contact us via the means listed at the bottom of the page, or leave a comment if you have further questions.

This FAQ was last updated on 19 February 2012.

What scale are the buildings and scenery elements?

All of our buildings at this stage are scaled for 30mm heroic scale miniatures such as those used in popular skirmish systems mounted on round lipped bases. The balconies, decking and carts are designed so you can place a miniature on a 30mm round lipped base (or smaller) fully on it. All of the windows are designed to account for base-height, so that figures mounted on bases are able to stand and be seen through them, and stick their hand out if they are in such a pose.

Can I remove the roof on the buildings?

Yes, the roof is fully removable from each building, so you can have miniatures inside the buildings during game play. You can also use the buildings to store smaller terrain elements when the gaming table is packed away.

Do the buildings have fully detailed interiors?

All of our buildings have fully detailed floors. They do not have internal walls or second storey floors at this stage, but we do have internal fit-outs planned as future releases that would provide these as well as decor elements such as tables and chairs in the future.

What material are they made of?

Our buildings and terrain are made of medium density fiberboard (MDF). This is a rigid material that can take both paint and glue, and be robust enough to survive being knocked around, roofs taken off and put back on, or miniatures standing all over them. MDF is the same material our 3mm thick laser-cut miniature bases are made of.

Can I assemble without glue?

All our buildings are designed to snap-fit without glue straight out of the pack. They can also be taken apart again if you wish to flat-pack them. Decorative elements, such as the roof spine, window and door frames, and building signs will require glue to affix.

What glue can I use?

We recommend white craft glue as it offers both strength and flexibility. You will need to allow at least 30min to an hour of drying time (preferably more) for the bond to reach full strength. If you wish to have your buildings and terrain assembled faster, or there are fiddly bits that need to stick immediately, you can also use standard superglue.

What paint can I use?

You can use the same paint you use to paint your miniatures! You can also use craft paint or house paint – this can be applied straight onto the MDF without undercoat as the MDF will readily absorb the paint. If you have access to an airbrush, this will make the shading and highlighting faster, though it is not essential. We do recommend you permanently assemble the basic building structure (with separate roof) if you intend to paint them, as the buildings can be difficult to assemble if large amounts of paint get onto the joins.

This shot and tab join is too tight! What can I do?

We strive to ensure that we get good clean fits with enough “clutch” factor so that the buildings can stay together and be taken apart without the need for glue. There could be a number of factors affecting a tab and slot join that could make it too tight – the easiest way to get them to fit is to lightly shave away on one side of the tab with a knife. The MDF should cut very easily and allow you to mediate how much material to remove to get a better fit. You can do the same with a file too.

Remember, safety first – if you are using a knife, ensure you always cut away from yourself, if you are filing, ensure you use a dust mask and clean up afterwards!
